Solar Permits in New Brunswick
Let’s start by discussing the solar permits required in New Brunswick prior to installing solar.
Every solar installation over 5kW in New Brunswick requires a wiring permit.
Some installations also require a building permit.
When you go solar with Sunly, we will determine what permits are required, and complete these applications for you.
Permit Application Process
The Solar Permit Application Process can be a complex one.
To apply for a solar wiring permit in New Brunswick, NB Power customers need to obtain a work order number before a permit can be processed. To obtain this permit, clients must call NB Power.
The electrical installer will then apply for the wiring permit online, filling out all details related to the electrical upgrades and changes.
When you go solar with Sunly, we handle this permit process for you - no trips to the building departments or long drawn phone calls - we’ve got you covered!
Some of these documents may require your signature, but your project coordinator will facilitate all the paperwork, and let you know if they require signatures.

Navigating Solar Regulations
On top of the permit requirements, there are additional regulations that need to be met to go solar in New Brunswick.
Firstly, the installer you choose to complete the project must be a licensed electrical contractor, be employed by one, or be a certified technician from NBCC.
Next, Renewables NB must be contacted to inform them of the new grid-tied solar installation. They will inspect the installation prior to the system being live.
All products involved in the solar installation must be in compliance with the Electrical Bulletin 165-3-8. All equipment must have a certification mark to confirm appropriate CSA standards under the Canadian Electrical Code.

Government Incentives and Grants
As well as navigating solar permits and regulations, going solar involves applying for government incentives. As with the permits, if you choose Sunly as your solar experts, we will assist you in applying for these and make sure you are informed along the process.
The government of Canada is currently offering a grant for up to $5,000 for homeowners going solar. This is the Greener Homes Grant.
This grant will only be available until March 1st, 2024.
To apply for this, homeowners must register online through Natural Resources Canada.
They will then have to complete a pre-audit. Once they have completed the initial audit and submitted all required documents, the homeowner will have to have the same audit company return after the installation has been completed to close the loop.
This process also qualifies the homeowner for a 0% loan of up to $40,000 - the Greener Homes Loan. This loan will also be ending on March 1st, 2024.
All applicants prior to March 1st will still be eligible, so make sure you have your application submitted prior to the closing date!
